hen we began working on the new Sky magazine in December 2008, we created a list of notable people we wanted to land for our covers. We knew we had our work cut out for us when it came to getting on radars. Charlize Theron was on that original list of roughly two dozen celebrities. Sure, she has star power. And beautiful. But our goal early on was to feature her within a bigger story about South Afica and the Oscarwinning Afican Outreach Project. This World Cup and the global spotlight on her home country gave us just the link we had been seeking. We are surrounded by celebrity every day. almost like white noise. But when you pair celebrity with something bigger, or more meaningful to the reader, a winning combination. Less sensational. Such as this cover story on what South Aficans want you to know about their country. Perhaps these insider perspectives will inspire you to learn more. Even visit. Speaking of our launch, I was in Los Angeles in March 2009 with our marketing director, Natalie Bushaw, and our global lifestyle editor, Jason Oliver Nixon, for a launch party. While in town we called on a noted talent management agency with a goal to get Sky on the radars of their celebrity clients. Jason arrived before us and crossed paths with Lady Gaga at the font door. She held the door for him and was traveling solo. Just look at her now (see page 21)! What a a year makes.
