Steven Lavine will be stepping down in 2017 after a historic three-decade tenure at the arts school
envisioned by Walt Disney. seen a lot of change in Los art scene during that time.
What is the role of an institution such as CalArts in the life of a city? CalArts feeds and
attracts the next generation of two generations: established artists for the faculty
and the next generation of students who will inspire people in this city.
What is one way that the art scene has changed since been here? Galleries are a
visible manifestation of change: Smaller ones show younger artists and larger ones feed them as
they grow up. That process started in about 1970. generation of graduates really had
to leave town because there was no gallery scene. Some people stayed behind and started galleries, and now many of our graduates in visual arts stay in LA.
one thing that inspires you about LA? This may sound strange, but LA have
such good taste. In a way, good taste is a surrogate for saying you like the way things
a right set of colors, way to dress or food to enjoy. LA has this attitude,
which leads to a visual adventure. no right way to be, right neighborhood to live in. a
reason so much adventuresome work gets done here, because not as burdened by the past.
The basics: Founded in 1937, Pepperdine is a private, independent, nonprofit university affiliated
with the Churches of Christ and is home to 7,600
students on its 830-acre main campus in Malibu.

University of California, Los Angeles
The basics: Founded in 1919, UCLA is
largest university, enrolling about 42,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

has had 13 Nobel Prizes awarded to faculty and

University of Southern California
The Basics: USC dates back to 1880. The
student body includes 19,000 undergraduate and
