THE BASICS: The fi rst class of this school and
research institute was welcomed in 2010, with
students engaged in a curriculum focused on
patients. Only 42 spots are available, though the
institute received upwards of 4,600 applications
ACHIEVEMENTS: In the 2015 academic year, students
gave 89 presentations at regional and national
research conferences and published 24 peer-reviewed articles. One hundred percent of graduates have been placed into residency programs.
UNIQUE PROGRAMS: Interprofessionalism skills are
key here; students take classes with health students from the neighboring Jefferson College of
Health Sciences. are also required
in the third year of rotations, which covers timely

The current health care climate is rapidly changing. So should medical
education. That was the idea when the Virginia Tech Carilion School of
Medicine was born, opening to students in 2010. It was an opportunity to
rethink medical education something we continue to refine.
Through small-group, problem-based learning and hands-on experiences,
combined with intensive research and interprofessionalism training, our
graduates are making a difference in patient care around the country.
