paramount at Ferrum, established in 1913. The
Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Monitoring
Program sees professors and students conducting tests and reporting data to state departments. The community service efforts continue
with student participation in programs such as
Orphan Medical Network International and Stop
Hunger Now events.
UNIQUE PROGRAMS: Ferrum is the only private school
in Virginia to offer a four-year degree in agricultural science, complete with an active farm.

THE BASICS: The roots of New River Community
College began with a technical school in 1959
before transforming into NRCC 10 years later
to serve Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski
counties and the city of Radford. Today, 44 percent of students are enrolled in career/technical

provide a trained workforce for the New River
Valley. Credentialing, ongoing training, preemployment testing and instruction in advanced
technology are all offered.
UNIQUE PROGRAMS: Students involved in
CAD/engineering design technology program
have been at the helm of real-world design projects. Models of flying submersibles, unmanned
combat vehicles and aircraft were reviewed by
the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
in Washington, D.C.
