Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic were two of the largest employers in Southwest Virginia when they came together in 2007 to form a wide-ranging partnership that would
both the economy. That partnership led to the creation of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, a public-private institution
considered one of the primary engines driving emerging technology industry today. NANCY HOWELL AGEE,
PRESIDENT AND CEO OF CARILION CLINIC
Is it unusual for two organizations like Carilion and Virginia
Tech to partner so closely? You plenty of universities
that have medical centers. But yet to see a land grant
university and a large health enterprise come together in a
public-private partnership so successfully.
When you look into the future, where do you see this partnership going? I think we
will continue this trajectory of being a world-class research hub and a sophisticated
school of medicine, and continuing our excellence in clinical care. That said, our
vision is also that we will spin off companies, commercialize technology, grow more
entrepreneurs in the region and, in general, grow the region with skilled workers and
Growing up in this area, did you ever think you would be sitting here, in a high-tech
medical campus right downtown? In a word: no. Looking out of my office from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, what I used to look at was just a brown
Now I see this incredible complex and what has spawned from that already.
TIM SANDS, PRESIDENT OF VIRGINIA TECH
What do you think of the role the Virginia Tech-Carilion
partnership is playing in reshaping the economy?
The residents can see the vibrancy of that small city growing.
They can see the talent that has been brought in from all over
the world. Roanoke has been a great partner in it. You look at
the greenways built, the outdoor activities, restaurants
that have come in. You have a sense of momentum and energy.
The partnership with Carilion has seen success so far, but next? made
big strides in the past seven years, but now we literally want to double that then build around it an ecosystem that will attract partners beyond Carilion
Clinic and Virginia Tech. not just about Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech. about
creating an environment that attracts companies and facilitates startups.
What do you say to people who think technology in such a rural setting?
got a small city that is getting bigger and more vibrant. You can go 10 minutes
away and in nature. You have a quality of life that mixes that urban feel with
the outdoors. just a magical combination.
