Heyerdahl was one of most prominent
explorers. He was an archeologist and
environmentalist whose career spanned more than
60 years. But he is best known for his 1947 KonTiki expedition. Traveling in a hand-built raft,
Heyerdahl sailed more than 4,000 miles across
the Ocean from Peru to French Polynesia.
His goal? To show that the islands had once been
settled by ancient South Americans. He wrote
an international best seller about his expedition,
which inspired the 1950 Academy Award-winning
documentary plus a remake in 2012.
