A Granddaughter Remembers...
eattle writer Daytona Strong is
the author of a Norwegian food
and heritage blog called Outside
Oslo (outside-oslo.com). the
granddaughter of two Norwegian
grandmothers, both of whom made
inspired dishes an unforgettable part of
childhood. While her Grandma
Agny has very few written recipes, Strong
uses Scandinavian cookbooks and a lot of
trial and error in an effort to recreate her
dishes. Her other grandmother, Adeline,
left behind a collection of recipes that
she started as a young woman, before
marriage, and added to throughout
her life. For Strong, the yellowing spiral
notebook and faded cards are a treasure.
Strong preserves what she can of the
written recipes, although she admits
they are not always easy to use, and adds
whatever she can to an online collection
she has created over the years, some of
which can be found in her blog.
For Strong, the idea of cooking and
capturing the process was natural.
we were making lefse,
sandbakkels, krumkakker, or anything
else, we were creating memories while
preserving recipes. written
instructions were usually pretty limited,
so take the opportunity to record the
steps in detail as she says.
